Ohio Waterworks Improvements

Ohio, Illinois

The Village of Ohio is a small town in Bureau County with a population of 540.  Ohio was required to make improvements to their water system because of the minimum allowable arsenic MCL being lowered from 50 to 10 μg/L.  Willett, Hofmann & Associates was hired by the Village to construct a new water treatment plant which included a new gravity filter, a new ion exchange unit for color removal, booster pumps, piping, valving, an underground backwash tank, an underground brine tank, chemical feed equipment and a water treatment plant building.

The project started by creating detailed construction drawings and specifications for bidding.  WHA engineers prepared proposal forms, notice to bidders and the contract documents necessary for public bidding, then assisted the City in obtaining and evaluating bids and awarding the contract.

The well house design work consisted of concrete work and masonry, thermal and moisture protection, chemical feed equipment, well building equipment and piping, well pump modifications, mechanical, electrical and SCADA / Control equipment.

In addition, WHA prepared all necessary permits required from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, then responded to all agency comments and requests for information until the project was approved and permits granted.

WHA assisted in obtaining an IEPA Revolving Fund Loan for the project.  The Village also received a Department of Commerce and Economic Development grant, and WHA assisted in the required reporting for the grant.

During the construction phase, WHA will provide on-site construction observation to ensure that the work is proceeding in accordance with the contract specifications.  WHA also will review shop drawings, catalog data and samples to ensure that materials and procedures are adhering to the contract specifications.  At the project’s end, WHA will provide the final construction inspection, and create as-built drawings to document any mid-project changes made to the original plans and specifications.

WHA also will approve payments to contractors throughout the project, advising the City of the progress of the project and the quality of the work before payments are made.

The winning bidder has been selected and the project is currently in the construction phase.  We would be happy to update you on this project as it progresses.
