City of Rochelle Union Pacific Intermodal Facility Sewer Improvements Rochelle, Illinois
Rochelle, Illinois was already
well known as a transportation hub when Union Pacific chose it as the location
for their new Global III Intermodal Facility. Designed to serve as a critical
interchange hub and loading and unloading terminal for rail intermodal shipments
throughout the Chicago metropolitan area, the new facility gives Union Pacific
the capacity to expediate operations for current shipments, as well as room for
expansion in the future.
The professional engineers of Willett, Hofmann & Associates were hired by the City of Rochelle and Rochelle Municipal Utilities to design the municipal sanitary sewer infrastructure to serve the new intermodal facility, as well as the anticipated future development south of Rochelle along the IL 251 corridor.
The project included the Intermodal Drive submersible lift station; 1,950 lineal feet of 12” diameter forcemain; 5,600 lineal feet of 15” diameter sanitary sewer; 220 lineal feet of 21” diameter sanitary sewer; and 1,500 lineal feet of 24” diameter sanitary sewer. The Intermodal Drive lift station is a 32 foot deep poured-in-place lift station which was constructed in poor soil and groundwater conditions, requiring careful soil testing.
Willett, Hofmann & Associates, Inc. also prepared the construction drawings, IEPA permits and specifications and provided construction observation for the lift station, forcemain and sanitary sewer improvements.
