Today's the day - thank you ACEC-Illinois for recognizing our work again in the 2021 Engineering Excellence Awards. The North Galena Street over Carroll Creek bridge in Mt. Carroll, Carroll County, Illinois has been chosen for a Special Achievement Award. The historic Pratt Thru Truss was constructed in 1901 and is considered one of the very few wrought iron bridges left in existence in Illinois. Detailed analysis of the structure and abutments was required to assure structural integrity for conversion into a pedestrian/bicycle facility. Highlights of the finished product including the IPE timber deck and the aesthetics of the rehabilitated structural steel and ornaments, turned out better than anticipated. After construction, the bridge immediately looked as if it had been designed as a pedestrian bridge all along. #Wha #awardwinningbridge

It's time for another past award winner in our lead up to the 2021 ACEC-Illinois Engineering Excellence Awards. This week we're looking back to another 2017 winner - WHA's Harmon Park Drainage Phase II. This project involved the transformation of a park into a detention area/green space which is usable during dry weather but carries major storm water flows during wet weather. Inlet and outlet energy dissipation and safety were major influences on the final design, since part of the area is still a park. Just under 28,000 cubic yards of earth were removed from the site during the construction of the detention area. #Wha #cityofrockford
