Phase I & II Services

County Highway 8 is the main north-south corridor running through Bureau County, Illinois.  The structure carrying C.H. 8 over the IAIS Railroad and Hennepin Canal is located at the south edge of Wyanet, IL.  The project involved removing and replacing the existing six span structure originally constructed in 1931, which included a single span (1 @ 115’-0”) historic thru Pratt truss capable of carrying a HS20 loading.  The truss was to be removed, rehabilitated and moved to a new location on a Township roadway 1 mile from its existing location.

In addition to the historic truss relocation and structure replacement on C.H. 8, the profile of C.H. 8 was raised approximately 10’ which resulted in the realignment of Tow Path Road, reconstruction of the railroad crossing at Tow Path Road, reconstruction of a portion of the Shared Use Path and Bike Path running parallel to the Hennepin Canal, extending an existing double barrel (11’-0” x 11’-0”) reinforced concrete box culvert 110’-0” to give a final length of 240’-0”, and approach roadway work on the township route leading up to the new home of the historic truss.  Tow Path Road was constructed under staged traffic while C.H. 8 remained open to the public, upon its completion C.H. 8 was closed and the rest of the project was completed.  Construction on T.R. 271A commenced once C.H. 8 was open to traffic and was completed in the spring of 2012.  This was an important element for this project as it was the connection of C.H. 8 to the Hennepin Canal Trail Path.  The new Tow Path Road connects the elevated C.H. 8 by running along the slope of C.H. 8 bridge embankment down to the Canal level and then crossing the IAIS rail road to tie into the path

The proposed structure on C.H. 8 consisted of a two span (113’-0”:81’-0”) 44” plate girder crossing the IAIS Railroad & Shared Use Path and a single span (164’-6”) 66” plate girder crossing the Hennepin Canal on integral abutments and multi-column piers similar to the existing to add a historic element to the new structure.

The historic truss was moved to T.R. 271A over West Bureau Creek where it was set on closed reinforced concrete abutments, the wingwalls stepped as was typical in structures crossing the Hennepin Canal.  The truss was sandblasted, WHA inspected it for deterioration and provided retrofit details, then it was rehabilitated, painted and moved into place where the deck was poured and approach roadway completed.
