Phase I & II Services
The project was located in a congested urban and residential area on the east edge of the downtown. The work included designing an ADA accessible side walk and parking lot elements for the new emergency room facility. The new facility also required new access points to the existing parking garage and adjacent clinic.
The parking area was expanded onto a vacated section of a city street. A 22’ high reinforced concrete retaining wall was incorporated into the parking lot design due to grades as steep as 9½ %. The street that was to be vacated had been used for maneuvering semi deliveries to the adjacent Medical Clinic, so the retaining wall location had to be such that the large wheel-base trucks could still utilize the existing loading docks. The steep grade for the area created many challenges for complying with ADA requirements
Access to the existing emergency room ambulance bays needed to be maintained as well as keeping the adjacent streets open to traffic during the construction. A staging plan was developed to allow the use of the existing ambulance bays until the new ambulance bays and parking were built.
